Cosmo City Super Stops and Transport Upgrades
The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), representing the City of Johannesburg, is making great progress with Phase One of the Cosmo City Super Stops and Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) Facilities project. With 70% of the work completed, this initiative highlights the City’s effort to create accessible, safe, and user-friendly transport infrastructure.
Located in the bustling suburb of Cosmo City, along South Africa Drive in Ward 100 of Region C, this 3.5km project stretches from Malibongwe Drive to Russia Avenue. It aims to improve infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, enhance public transport services, and ensure access for all residents.
Key Features of the Cosmo City Super Stops and Transport Upgrades:
- Paved and asphalted sidewalks for safer walking.
- Mini-bus taxi lay-bys and bus stop shelters for better transport access.
- Environmental upgrades, including landscaping and public space improvements.
- Improved walkways and street lighting for better visibility and safety.
- Solutions for local stormwater issues, creating a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists.
JDA CEO, Themba Mathibe, emphasized, “The Cosmo City Super Stops and Non-Motorised Transport Facilities project is a crucial step in building an inclusive and connected city. Our focus on pedestrian safety, universal access, and eco-friendly infrastructure ensures that every resident can move around the city easily and safely.”
This project follows the Expanded Public Works Programme, which creates jobs and supports local communities, helping to boost socio-economic development through infrastructure projects.

Supporting Sustainable Cosmo City Transport Solutions:
The design of the project ensures minimal disruption to traffic. It maintains the current road layout while adding much-needed taxi and bus lay-bys, without needing to relocate existing traffic lights or modify major traffic intersections.
By seamlessly integrating walking, cycling, and public transport options, the project promotes sustainable and inclusive transport solutions for the future.
Mathibe concluded, “We are dedicated to delivering infrastructure that transforms urban spaces, improves lives, and strengthens Johannesburg’s connection as a people-centered city.”
This project is just one example of how the City of Johannesburg is improving its public transport network and creating a more connected and accessible urban environment for all residents.
